A contemporary acrylic painting on paper "Untitled (82-P9)" by Detroit Cass Corridor artist, William Antonow. Hand signed along the lower margin. Original gallery tag from Cantor / Lemberg Gallery on the verso. The work presents two bold abstract forms set against a light ground marked by charcoal-like gestures, scattered speckling, and layered surface texture. On the left, a red geometric shape with stepped contours is outlined in white and surrounded by dark gestural marks. On the right, a black angular vertical form is set within an orange field accented by linear scratches and translucent washes. The composition balances hard-edged shapes with expressive mark-making, creating contrast between structure and spontaneity. An opportunity to acquire an original artwork by an artist connected to the Detroit Cass Corridor movement, an important postwar regional art scene that has received growing institutional and collector attention.
From a private collection. Dimensions: 46.25"h x 52"w x 1.5"d (framed). In very good condition.
William Antonow (active 1960s–1980s) was an American artist associated with Detroit’s influential Cass Corridor movement, a major postwar art scene known for its experimental and material-driven approach to contemporary art. Working during a formative period in Detroit’s cultural history, Antonow exhibited alongside artists connected to one of the Midwest’s most significant avant-garde communities. His work reflects the movement’s emphasis on abstraction, found materials, and expressive surface treatment that helped distinguish Detroit as an important center for contemporary art in the late 20th century. As interest in regional modernism and Cass Corridor artists has grown, Antonow’s works have gained renewed recognition among collectors focused on historically important American art movements.
