This authentic Greek olive jar, dating back to 1930, is a striking example of traditional Mediterranean utilitarian pottery. Originally hand-crafted for the bulk storage and preservation of olive oil, the jar features a classic ovoid silhouette that tapers to a narrow, pointed base—a design historically used to allow sediment to settle at the bottom. The exterior showcases a rugged, earth-toned texture with a weathered slip finish, reflecting decades of organic aging. It is paired with a custom-fitted, tripod wrought iron stand that provides both stability and a sophisticated lift, making it an ideal statement piece for high-end interior or garden designs. In early 20th-century Greece, these large-scale terracotta vessels were essential for agricultural life. Beyond simple storage, the thick ceramic walls acted as natural insulation, keeping the precious olive oil at a stable temperature to prevent spoilage. The pointed bottom design was often utilized by partially burying the jar in the cool earth of a cellar or resting it in a specialized rack or stand, as seen here.
The iron stand is sturdy and exhibits a natural rusted finish that complements the rustic aesthetic of the jar.
