Antique large Covered Jar, attributed to Davenport Factory in Longport, Staffordshire, England circa 1870. Davenport Pottery was a renowned English manufacturer based in Longport, Staffordshire and operated between 1794 and 1887.
This design is a classic example of Chinoiserie, an artistic style influenced by Asian art and was highly popular in late 19thC England. Gilded and detailed stylized cranes, butterflies, plum tree branches & bamboo. Two side handles with applied chased bead decorations highlighted with gold.
Measures 17" height, 13" width and 8.5"diameter rim. The footed base measures 8.5" diameter. Weighs approx 8 pounds unpackaged. Unmarked other than the written numbers 3184 and letter S.
Very good condition for a 150 year old piece, with notation of a clean, stable repair to one handle, a shallow chip on the underside of the lid, and star hairline crack on the underside of the base, as shown, and minor gilding wear mentioned for accuracy.
