Late 19th century English wall pocket cut and pierced from solid brass in a stylized crown motif. Known as a tidy, this form was traditionally mounted near hearths or entryways to hold letters, matches, or small notes. The sculptural pierced design and rich patina give the piece strong decorative presence while retaining its practical original purpose. Of note, this item was repurposed in the 19th century from what appears to be an engraved brass sign (see back).
