A striking and highly expressive mid-century study of a horse, executed in bold ink and atmospheric washes on paper. The work displays a sophisticated mastery of movement and negative space, characteristic of the 1950s modernist aesthetic. While the signature remains partially obscured, the technique and medium suggest Professor Paul Mannen (1906–1976) as a strong contender. Mannen, a distinguished head of art departments in the Southwest, was noted for his fluid watercolor studies alongside his traditional oils. Because we cannot be certain of the artist, we are listing it based on its undeniable visual merit and exceptional technical skill. The scale and gestural quality make it a perfect companion for a Mid-Century Modern or Asian-inspired interior..
The artist’s use of varied wash densities creates a sense of depth and muscle tone that is best appreciated in person. The earthy washes and linen-textured matting make this a seamless fit for an interior featuring Mid-Century Modern furniture or traditional Japanese elements.
The painting is framed, matted, behind glass and to be sold as such.

Paper Characteristics: The work is executed on heavy-weight watercolor paper. As it is not fully mounted—a common practice to preserve the integrity of the medium—the paper displays natural, gentle undulations (waves) characteristic of watercolor application. Frame & Matting: The frame appears to be original to the piece and remains in exceptional shape with no dings, nicks, or structural flaws. It features a high-quality linen-textured mat that perfectly complements the mid-century aesthetic. Verso (Backing): The original brown paper backing remains fully intact and sealed, protecting the artwork from dust and environmental factors. To preserve this original state, the painting has not been removed from the frame for internal measurement. less
