Taken from a French chateau, this unique pair of staircase baluster terminals was hand-carved in limestone, circa 1700. Based on the accumulation of lichen near the base, the terminals have spent significant time outside, most likely at the base of a grand staircase. Fronted by grotesque mascarons with foliate bodies, the verso sides are also well-carved in the form of half-baluster pilasters. Topped by finials (which are separate pieces of stone) that are carved on all sides, the terminals would make fantastic sculptural elements inside or outdoors.
