XXI and originating from Carsten Niebuhr’s important travel account Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien und andern umliegenden Ländern, first published around 1774. This work stands among the most influential European publications documenting the cultures, customs, and material life of the Ottoman Empire and the broader Near East.
