XXI and originating from Carsten Niebuhr’s important travel account Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien und andern umliegenden Ländern, first published around 1774. This work stands among the most influential European publications documenting the cultures, customs, and material life of the Ottoman Empire and the broader Near East. The engraving presents nine distinct headgear types, each carefully rendered and numbered, offering a visual taxonomy of Ottoman identity and hierarchy. The turbans and caps depicted were far more than decorative elements; they functioned as clear indicators of social status, profession, religious affiliation, and regional origin. In a society where clothing communicated rank instantly, such variations carried deep cultural meaning. Figures 21 through 23 depict common and scholarly turban styles, ranging from simpler village wear to the large, voluminous forms associated with learned men in Constantinople, often structured with internal padding to maintain their impressive size. Figures 24 to 26 present more formal and ceremonial headpieces, including those worn by clergy and individuals of elevated rank within the Ottoman court. Particularly striking are the taller kavuk-style turbans, which emphasize verticality and authority. Figures 27 and 28 show conical felt caps wrapped with turbans, commonly associated with dervish orders or specific administrative roles, while figure 29 introduces a more unusual, horn-like projection, likely connected to ceremonial or military functions. Together, the plate provides a compelling visual insight into the structured and symbolic world of Ottoman dress. The engraving is executed with fine linework and clarity, characteristic of high-quality 18th-century European printmaking. Its clean composition and academic precision make it both an informative document and an appealing decorative piece. This print is especially suitable for collectors of ethnographic material, Ottoman history, or early travel literature, and works beautifully as part of a curated wall display focused on historical costume or cultural studies. Condition: Good condition for its age, with overall age toning and some light foxing. Minor edge wear and slight irregularities to the margins, consistent with its age and original binding. The sheet retains a strong and attractive impression. Framing tips: This engraving would benefit from a museum-style presentation with a wide ivory or off-white mount to emphasize its clean layout and fine detail. A dark wood or ebonized frame would provide contrast and create a refined, scholarly appearance suitable for both classic and modern interiors. This is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
