Adriaen van der werff (kralingen, january 21, 1659 – rotterdam, november 12, 1722) was a dutch painter, sculptor, and architect. Biography born in kralingen, near rotterdam, he was a student of eglon van der neer. A precocious artist, by the age of 17 he was already working independently in rotterdam, painting religious and mythological scenes and portraits, and quickly achieved considerable fame. In 1697, he was appointed court painter to elector palatine john william. The elector palatine granted him a pension and ennobled him. Van der werff was considered by his contemporaries to be the greatest dutch painter of his time, before being accused of betraying the dutch naturalist tradition in the 19th century. His younger brother, pieter van der werff (1661–1722), was his pupil. See less
