This plate presents a compelling combination of observational astronomy and early theoretical understanding of cometary motion, reflecting the scientific curiosity of the Enlightenment period. The composition is arranged in three principal sections. The upper and lower panels depict comets with extended tails, rendered through precise copperplate engraving and enhanced with subtle hand-colouring that brings a warm, luminous quality to the celestial forms. These elongated, radiant shapes emphasize the dramatic appearance of comets as observed in the night sky, capturing both their movement and ephemeral beauty. At the center of the sheet is a circular diagram illustrating the orbit of a comet, likely around the Sun, with annotated paths and positions. This schematic reflects the growing influence of Newtonian physics and the increasing ability of astronomers to predict and understand cometary trajectories. The inclusion of both observational imagery and orbital theory makes this plate particularly rich in both scientific and visual content. Of special historical interest is the depiction of a comet observed by the astronomer Johannes Hevelius in Danzig (Gdańsk) in February and March 1661. This reference connects the print directly to early modern astronomical observation and the work of one of the most important astronomers of the 17th century. Such imagery bridges two centuries of scientific development, from direct observation to printed educational dissemination. Friedrich Johann Bertuch (1747–1822), the publisher of this work, was a key figure in the popularization of knowledge. His *Bilderbuch für Kinder*, issued in 12 volumes between 1790 and 1830, contained over 1,200 engraved plates covering natural history, science, world cultures, and mythology. This print exemplifies the clarity, craftsmanship, and educational ambition of the series. Visually, the strong contrast between the dark engraved backgrounds and the softly coloured comet forms creates a striking decorative effect. The minimal composition and elegant linework make it particularly suitable for both classic and contemporary interiors, where it can serve as a refined and intellectually engaging focal point. Condition report: Good condition overall with age toning and some light spotting, consistent with early 19th-century paper. Minor creasing and edge wear may be present. The engraving remains sharp and well-defined, with the hand-colouring still clearly visible. Framing tips: This piece benefits from a generous ivory or museum-white mat to enhance contrast and provide visual space around the composition. A black or ebonized wood frame will emphasize the graphic quality, while a warm walnut frame can bring out the subtle tones of the paper and colouring. Technique: Hand-coloured copperplate engraving Maker: Friedrich Johann Bertuch, Weimar, 1807 Special note: This is an original early 19th century print, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. See less
