This finely composed scene presents a diverse assembly of individuals in traditional dress, offering a vivid ethnographic snapshot of the cultural variety within the broader Near Eastern and Caucasian regions. The composition is drawn by the noted French historical artist Henri Félix Emmanuel Philippoteaux and engraved by Pierre. Philippoteaux was renowned for his ability to combine historical accuracy with refined artistic presentation, and this print is a fine example of his interest in costume and cultural identity. The engraving captures both elegance and narrative, placing the figures in a gently mountainous landscape suggestive of the Caucasus. Prominently featured are two women identified as “Femmes de Tiflis,” dressed in flowing garments with delicate veils and richly colored fabrics, embodying grace and refinement. A mounted Kurdish cavalryman, or “Cavalier kurde,” stands confidently beside his horse, holding a long spear, emphasizing martial tradition and regional identity. In the foreground, a seated Persian figure is shown in elaborate attire with intricate patterning, while a standing Circassian figure, armed and alert, adds a dynamic presence to the composition. The engraving is enhanced with original hand coloring, carefully applied to highlight the textures and ornamentation of the costumes. Subtle shading and fine linework contribute to the depth and realism of the scene. The print was published by Dufour, Mulat et Boulanger in Paris, with printing by Laurent, further anchoring it within the tradition of high-quality French 19th-century illustrated works. This piece is highly decorative and historically engaging, appealing to collectors of ethnographic prints, costume studies, and orientalist imagery. It also works exceptionally well as a standalone statement piece or as part of a curated wall arrangement focused on cultural or travel themes. Note: This is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. Condition: Good condition for its age, with overall age toning to the paper and some light foxing, mainly in the margins. Minor edge wear and small losses, particularly at the corners, consistent with handling and age. The sheet retains a warm antique patina. Framing tips: This print would benefit from a generous cream or ivory mount to complement the paper tone and enhance the visual depth of the composition. A dark wood or ebonized frame would provide contrast and elevate the rich hand coloring, making it suitable for both classic and contemporary interiors.
