Very delicate meissen porcelain figurine around 1900: a beautiful young woman, barefoot and wearing a sleeveless dress that flows around her body, draped in cloths that cast artistic folds, which also cover her hair pinned up, in the glow of the torch she holds out in front of her in her right hand, reading intently from an open book she holds in her other hand, whilst leaning against a celestial globe which stands atop a pile of books stacked on a tree; at her feet, in front of the tree, another book with a magnifying glass, a test tube and an owl perched on a ruler, all attributes of science: book/codex – symbol of knowledge, teaching and scholarship; magnifying glass/telescope – attributes of astronomy and philosophy; celestial globe/globe – for geography, astronomy and the understanding of the world; ruler/compass – symbols of geometry and architecture, owl – classic attribute of minerva (pallas athena), goddess of wisdom and science, medical instruments – medicine, torch/light – enlightenment through knowledge. On a tall, truncated cone-shaped rock base with gold-hightened rocailles.
designer: emmerich andresen (1843 - 1902) sculptor, based in dresden since 1870, made his debut at the berlin art exhibition in 1871, 1886-1902 head and professor of the design department of the meissen manufactory, modeled various clock cases, mirrors, groups of soldiers, allegories and busts. Design of model p 136 in 1894.
