Signed and … Read more Fine antique Japanese silk scroll painting "Peony Flower and Butterflies" by a well-known artist named Kawabata Gyokusho (1842–1913). Signed and sealed by the artist: “Gyokusho” (玉章). Peony flower is a symbol of wealth in Japanese culture, and a butterfly is a symbol of transformation, rebirth, and eternity, also of love and marriage and Samurai Heritage. Watercolor and ink on silk over paper. Beautifully mounted on silk. Bone roller ends. Paper on back. Japan, Meiji Era, circa late 19th century to 1900s. Very Good condition - minor age wear overall, minor foxing and staining, clean. This scroll painting can be trimmed and framed.
