The feel of this piece is amazing - soft and supple, smooth and very tactile. A finely hand woven basket.or backpack / knap-sack / tote bought on the island of Bali in the late 70's by ourselves, made on the island of Borneo, Malaysia/Indonesia by Ms Khristina in 1973.
That information is woven into the top of the basket.
Made from finely woven rattan skin or bemban reeds, alternating light and dark brown fibers stained with natural vegetable dyes.
The diagonal plaited weave creates a tight, flexible structure with a balanced form.
Tapered shape with a drawstring or lace-up closure. The work in the drawstring area is very superior to modern day examples. It is finished with a series of plaited loops, through which a securing cord is threaded.. The underside also decorated with concentric circles.
Geometric animalistic detail in a darker brown with two complete shoulder straps.
Historically these were used by the Penan people for carrying personal items, now popular as fashionable, artisanal handbags. Today they can be used for that purpose, or for display, dried flowers or whatever you wish to display.
This fine bag is in. perfect condition and is a superior and excellent example of tribal workmanship.
