Antique Hand-Hammered Silver-Washed Copper Pitcher, Arts & Crafts, c. 1900–1920
A handsomely formed hand-hammered copper pitcher with silver wash, dating to the Arts & Crafts period, circa 1900–1920. The tall cylindrical form with its pinched pouring spout, loop handle, and hand-rolled rim reflects the movement's foundational commitment to honest handcraft and simple, architectural form over industrial production.
The surface bears the marks of genuine hand work: irregular hammer impressions varying in depth and overlap, and a subtle vertical spine running down the front face of the body — the characteristic artifact of a metalsmith raising and shaping sheet copper by hand around a form. This kind of evidence of making is precisely what Arts & Crafts collectors and designers respond to.
The patina is rich and layered, with what appears to be a silver wash having worn over time to reveal the warm copper substrate beneath creating a mottled silver, bronze, and copper finish that photographs beautifully and reads as authentic age. The interior retains more of the original silver wash. The base shows some spotting consistent with age and outdoor exposure, noted in condition.
Unmarked, as was common with small Arts & Crafts workshops and individual craftspeople of the period.
