Characterful Japanese kimono tansu (isho-dansu) from the late Meiji period, constructed in two sections that are firmly joined together with the original metal side handles. The cabinet has a particularly strong presence thanks to its beautiful red-lacquered front, the rich visible wood grain, and the restrained dark metal fittings. The overall effect is both bold and refined, with exactly the lived-in beauty that works so well in a stylish contemporary interior.
Dimensions: height 97.5 cm, width 106 cm, depth 44 cm.
The layout is well balanced and highly practical. The piece features four generous drawers, ideal for clothing, linen, documents, or other larger items. On the right side is a smaller drawer above a fitted door, behind which are two smaller internal drawers. This combination of wide, deep drawers and more compact storage makes the cabinet especially functional in daily use.
The front has a warm, deep red-brown lacquered finish with attractive wear and subtle traces of use, giving the piece exactly the lived-in presence for which Japanese storage furniture is so admired. The dark iron fittings stand out beautifully against the lacquer and give the cabinet a strong graphic rhythm.
Handwritten or painted numerical markings are also visible on the reverse.
Thanks to its size and clear internal arrangement, this tansu works very well today as a storage cabinet in a living room, bedroom, hallway, or dressing space. It brings calm, character, and structure to a room, and combines effortlessly with minimalist, wabi-sabi, eclectic, or restrained architectural interiors.
A beautiful Japanese piece of furniture with a striking front, fine proportions, and a highly usable layout.
The cabinet is in very good, functional condition, with honest signs of age and use consistent with its period, material, and finish.
The original keys are still present, a rare and appealing detail that adds extra charm and authenticity to the piece.
