vase from thun (switzerland) in glazed and enameled terracotta with reliefs decorated with stylized plants and owls, known as "chrutmuster." late 19th - early 20th century. Signed under the base.

documentation: the decoration with the owl motif is called "chrutmuster" in german (literally: decoration with "chrut" motifs, a term from the bernese dialect referring to a herb or plant). This name designates a decoration characteristic of ceramics from the heimberg-steffisburg region, rooted in the local technique of barolet decoration and bernese engraved decoration. This motif was developed based on local floral decorations (tulip motifs) from around 1850, although we do not know exactly which potteries were involved in this transformation.

the earliest ceramics featuring this owl motif that can be dated without any possible ambiguity were exhibited at the 1878 paris exposition (v&a inv. 736-1878). However, majolica from thun, which the germans often call "pariser geschirr – parisian ware," in reference to this exposition, produced between 1870 and 1875, were probably already decorated with this motif (see snm lm-74294). The name "chrutdecoration" is first found in writing in the "journal de thune et de l’oberland bernois" of march 15, 1879 (tat vol. 3, no. 63). See less
