the painting depicts hercules, naked to the waist, captured in a pose of firm balance and calm resolve, depicted with his powerful muscles. The hero is shown holding a club in his right hand, while his left hand rests resolutely on a surface. He holds a flap of the nemean lion's pelt, which falls over his body like a cloak, enveloping his torso and dangling over his belly.
he thus displays the symbols of his first labor and his superhuman strength: having killed the invulnerable lion with his bare hands or with his club, he wore its pelt as invincible armor.
the face, framed by a thick beard and shaggy hair, presents marked and intensely human features; the hero's expression, far from classicist heroism, has been interpreted as being permeated by a thoughtful and melancholic streak. He is shown not in action but in a restrained pose, which accentuates the monumental and "statue-like" nature of the figure.
the mythological hero must have held a symbolic meaning for the patrons of the time, alluding to "virtues or attributes in which one could recognize oneself or project one's aspirations."
the work presented here, of great pictorial vigor, is distinguished by its energetic pictorial rendering and a stylistic approach that allows it to be placed in the flourishing workshop of giovanni francesco barbieri (1591-1666).
this subject recurs in several works created by the master throughout his career, presented in versions differing in posture, gesture, and spatial construction. Barbieri focuses on the figure of the mythical hero with a baroque approach, characterized by strong plasticity, intense chiaroscuro, and particular attention to musculature.
among the best-known versions are:
- hercules with the club and the lion's skin, guercino, circa 1642, koelliker collection, milan
- hercules with the club and the lion's skin, guercino, circa 1645, villa medicea di cerreto guidi, florence
- hercules brandishing the club, guercino, private collection, milan
among the possible comparisons, the closest is certainly the one with hercules, now at the galleria nazionale di parma, formerly in the sanvitale collection, features a composition similar in style and iconography. There are no other known versions of this composition, which depicts the hero, recognizable by the club resting in his right hand and the fur around his waist, in a sunset landscape.
this hercules consciously distances itself from classicist models that tended to reconcile heroic strength with an ideal of beauty, instead proposing a worldly, anti-classical image, in which the hero appears more like a laborer than an exemplary demigod, emphasizing the rugged physicality of his body.
the work under consideration here is distinguished by an excellent rendering of the face, treated with a painterly quality that suggests the possible involvement of the master himself, although it is likely part of a collaborative effort within his workshop.
delving into the painting's authorship, as noted in professor emilo negro's study, the pictorial quality and typological characteristics allow us to recognize the characteristics of ercole gennari (cento, 1597-bologna, 1658), brother-in-law, student, and close collaborator of guercino.
it is well known that ercole devoted himself to executing copies and derivations of his famous brother-in-law's compositions, always respecting their compositional modules and technique.
excellent state of preservation, with restorations. Recently relined.
