This powerful sculptural table is a striking example of the Brazilian “Denúncia” movement of the 1970s—a radical design approach that used furniture as a vehicle for environmental awareness, protest, and material truth. Crafted entirely by hand from reclaimed tree trunks, the piece stands at the intersection of sculpture, social commentary, and functional design.
The base is composed of two hollowed tree trunks, preserved in their raw, organic form, creating a commanding architectural foundation. Above, the tabletop is formed from two naturally contoured wood slices, seamlessly joined from below, allowing the surface to read as a continuous, organic plane. The result is a composition that feels both primal and deliberate—anchored by mass, yet refined through craftsmanship.
Emerging in response to the rapid deforestation of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica), Denúncia furniture was conceived as a direct critique of environmental exploitation. Importantly, the wood used in these works was sourced from discarded or fallen material, reclaiming what would otherwise have been lost. In this context, the table becomes more than an object: it is a material witness, embodying both loss and preservation.
The tabletop displays a deep, warm red tonality—its natural hue developed through age and oxidation—adding visual richness and emphasizing the living history embedded in the wood. The surface has been carefully polished and cleaned, preserving its natural texture and patina while presenting the piece in excellent condition.
Bold, expressive, and deeply rooted in Brazilian cultural and ecological history, this table functions equally as a dramatic dining or statement piece and as a sculptural object with profound conceptual resonance. A matching set of six stools is available separately (Lot 765), allowing for a cohesive and immersive installation.
