An exceptional and increasingly rare set of twelve Brazilian modern dining chairs designed by Celina Zilberberg, executed in richly figured Brazilian rosewood (Jacarandá) during the 1960s. Large, complete dining sets from this period are seldom preserved together, making this ensemble particularly compelling for collectors and designers seeking both architectural scale and cohesive presence around a substantial dining table.
The design reflects the streamlined architectural language that defined Brazilian modern furniture in the postwar decades. Each chair is composed of a disciplined rectilinear structure, balancing structural clarity with refined sculptural proportion. The tall backrests are defined by two horizontal rails that create a strong graphic profile while maintaining visual lightness. Slender legs and cross stretchers provide stability while reinforcing the rational construction characteristic of the era.
Crafted in beautifully grained Brazilian rosewood, the frames display the dramatic tonal variation and depth that made Jacarandá one of the most prized hardwoods used in mid-century Brazilian furniture. The wood has been professionally restored and carefully refinished, revealing vibrant grain movement and warm amber undertones that enrich the otherwise restrained modernist composition.
The seats have been newly upholstered in warm saddle-toned mohair, whose soft nap introduces both comfort and visual warmth. The caramel hue contrasts elegantly with the deep rosewood frame while emphasizing the clean architectural lines of the chairs.
Despite their disciplined geometry, the chairs offer excellent comfort. The slightly curved backrest provides supportive posture, while the generously padded seats ensure a relaxed dining experience suited for long gatherings.
The vignette shown presents the chairs paired with a large 128-inch Guanabara dining table, demonstrating how the set performs beautifully at scale. Together, the chairs create a rhythmic architectural composition around the table, highlighting the monumental presence that a complete twelve-chair set can bring to a dining interior.
Carefully restored and newly upholstered, the chairs remain in excellent condition, preserving the integrity of the original craftsmanship while presenting with refined elegance in contemporary interiors.
