Liceu de Artes e Oficios, Brazil, c. 1960s. Produced for the Liceu’s institutional interiors, this three-seat sofa distills the formal restraint of Brazilian modernism into a long, quietly sculptural composition. A low, linear silhouette and gently angled arms emphasize horizontal calm; three loose seat cushions sit within a pared rail while the exposed frame and tapered legs read as a disciplined supporting armature. The piece articulates structural clarity and proportion rather than applied ornament, an approach consistent with mid-century pedagogic workshops and their emphasis on craft and utility.
Formally spare, the design balances a taut undercarriage with subtle arm caps and clean, crisp edges. The frame’s long sightlines and modestly arced under-rail produce a composed horizontality, while the taper of the legs and the precise relationship between seat and back create a purposeful repose. The sofa’s geometry reads as considered engineering of comfort — support and posture expressed as design outcomes rather than plushness.
Crafted in jacaranda (Brazilian rosewood), the frame has been professionally refinished to a warm, satin-matte tone that foregrounds the wood’s dramatic grain and tonal variation. The leather has been renewed to preserve the original upholstery pattern and layout; the hide functions as a sober, desaturated field that complements rather than competes with the wood’s figure. Joinery is honest and serviceable, the construction privileging material integrity and clear, economical detail.
Function is integral to the composition: the sofa offers a composed, supportive sit appropriate to both domestic and institutional interiors. Provenance: produced for Liceu de Artes e Oficios, acquired from a private collection in Petrópolis; matching armchairs are offered separately (see Lot 223). Condition: in excellent vintage condition — sympathetically refinished and reupholstered, with age-appropriate marks confined to feet and edges; restoration has been conservative and transparent.
A measured example of mid-century Brazilian seating, this Liceu de Artes e Oficios sofa is positioned for collections and interiors that prize material refinement, sculptural restraint, and the careful stewardship of authentic objects. Lot 222.
