Produced by Novo Rumo in the 1960s, this extendable dining table reflects the studio’s commitment to restrained modern design and practical domestic functionality. Novo Rumo was among the Brazilian manufacturers that helped disseminate modernist furniture during the mid-century period, translating the movement’s emphasis on clarity of structure and balanced proportions into pieces suited for everyday use. The table distills these principles through a disciplined composition and a focus on structural legibility.
The design is anchored by an oval tabletop with a softly beveled edge, creating a continuous and fluid profile. Beneath the top, a central support structure extends into a cross-shaped base that stabilizes the table while preserving visual openness around the perimeter. This arrangement allows seating to remain unobstructed and reinforces the table’s balanced proportions. The low, horizontal stance of the base contrasts with the broad oval surface above, establishing a sense of equilibrium between mass and lightness.
Finished in a deep ebony tone, the hardwood construction emphasizes the table’s sculptural silhouette while allowing the geometry of the form to remain the primary visual element. The monochromatic finish reinforces the design’s graphic clarity, drawing attention to the interplay between the curved tabletop and the linear structure of the base.
A concealed extension mechanism allows the tabletop to expand by approximately twelve inches, increasing seating capacity from four to six. This integration of function within the table’s structure reflects the modernist principle that adaptability should be embedded within the design rather than added as an external feature.
The table is presented in excellent vintage condition, with the finish and structure carefully preserved. A composed and functional example of Brazilian mid-century dining furniture, it reflects Novo Rumo’s contribution to the broader language of modernist design.
