Designed by Sergio Rodrigues (1927–2014), the “Cuiabá” dining table reflects the architect-designer’s commitment to structural legibility and the expressive potential of Brazilian hardwood. Created during a period in which Rodrigues sought to reconcile vernacular solidity with modern proportion, the model exemplifies his ability to distill mass into disciplined architectural form.
The composition is defined by a rectilinear top resting on a trestle base of substantial horizontal and vertical members. Broad plank supports anchor the table at either end, joined by a central stretcher that articulates the load-bearing logic of the structure. A circular cut-out within the stretcher introduces a measured sculptural gesture—an intentional interruption that relieves the density of the wood while reinforcing balance and symmetry. The feet extend laterally with grounded clarity, their softened edges tempering the table’s robust geometry.
Executed in richly toned hardwood, the surface reveals natural grain variation and warmth consistent with Rodrigues’ material vocabulary. The wood has been professionally restored, presenting in excellent vintage condition while preserving the integrity of the joinery and the clarity of the original form.
Function is embedded within the architecture: the generous top provides ample surface area, while the trestle configuration ensures stability without visual heaviness. The proportions allow the table to command space with quiet authority rather than ornament.
Originally conceived as part of a coordinated dining ensemble, the “Cuiabá” table stands as a resolved and materially articulate work. It reflects Rodrigues’ enduring contribution to Brazilian modernism—where structural clarity, craftsmanship, and cultural rootedness converge in a form of lasting presence.
