An iconic and historically significant Brazilian modern desk, the “Diplomata” was designed in 1965 by Jorge Zalszupin in response to the growing demand for refined office furniture during the development of Brasília. The model stands as one of Zalszupin’s most celebrated designs, exemplifying his inventive approach to material use and modern form.
Crafted from Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá), the desk features Zalszupin’s distinctive patchwork construction, composed of a carefully assembled collage of rosewood offcuts, each displaying unique tonal variation and grain. This method—both expressive and resource-conscious—became a signature of his work, transforming material efficiency into a powerful visual language.
The wide, generously proportioned tabletop and fully finished back allow the desk to be appreciated from all angles, making it suitable for placement at the center of a room rather than against a wall. Three drawers are integrated into the structure, each fitted with refined leather pulls that introduce a subtle tactile contrast and enhance functionality. Beneath the tabletop, the original L’Atelier seal remains intact, confirming authenticity and original production.
Recently refinished, the rosewood presents beautifully, with a rich patina and vibrant variation across the surface. The desk is in excellent vintage condition, with minor age-appropriate wear consistent with its period.
A rare and highly collectible work, the Diplomata desk is both a functional workspace and a sculptural statement—an enduring example of Zalszupin’s commitment to innovation, craftsmanship, and modern Brazilian design.
