A substantial and architecturally composed credenza in richly figured rosewood, designed by Giuseppe Scapinelli in Brazil in the 1950s. Elegant in scale and refined in execution, this long case piece embodies the sculptural restraint and material sophistication that define the best of Brazilian modern design from the postwar period.
The façade is distinguished by a disciplined, rhythmic arrangement of six doors below and six drawers above, creating a beautifully balanced elevation across its generous 106-inch width. The doors are framed with subtle beveling, a detail that gives the front a crisp, tailored edge while also emphasizing the cabinet’s quiet geometry. That beveled treatment lends depth and shadow to the plane of the wood, allowing the rosewood veneer to read with even greater richness and dimensionality.
The grain is especially striking throughout, with dramatic figuring and tonal variation that animate the surface without overwhelming the purity of the form. As with the finest Brazilian rosewood pieces of the period, the wood itself becomes part of the design language: dense, warm, and visually fluid, with a depth that shifts beautifully in changing light. Fully restored, the surface presents with clarity and cohesion, highlighting the natural movement of the grain while preserving the piece’s elegant mid-century character.
Scapinelli’s sensitivity to line is evident in the cabinet’s elongated proportions and in the way the upper drawer band creates a strong horizontal register above the more expansive lower storage sections. The recessed pulls and clean transitions between elements maintain the credenza’s streamlined profile, while the case appears to float above a finely resolved base. Tapered legs terminating in brass sabots add a note of polish and lift, introducing a subtle contrast of material and reinforcing the cabinet’s poised, elevated stance.
Beyond its aesthetic presence, the piece offers exceptional practicality. Six upper drawers provide organized smaller-scale storage, while the six lower doors open to six interior storage compartments, making it an unusually functional example for dining, living, or office settings. Keys are available, an increasingly rare and desirable detail that completes the integrity of the cabinet.
Both sculptural and highly usable, this credenza is a strong example of Giuseppe Scapinelli’s ability to merge architectural rigor with warmth, sensuality, and exquisite craftsmanship. It stands equally well as a statement sideboard, a monumental media cabinet, or a refined storage piece anchoring a large interior.
