Designed by Carlo Hauner, Brazil, c. 1950s. This paired set distills Brazilian modernism to a single, measured proposition: restrained silhouette, disciplined proportion, and an insistence on material truth. The composition is spare and sculptural — a ladder back composed of five horizontal slats rises from a clean seat rail, while four slim, tapered legs and a modestly arched under-seat profile establish a poised verticality and visual rhythm. The frame’s subtle rear splay and the crisply pared seat rail articulate a formal logic in which structure and silhouette are one and the same.
Crafted in rosewood (jacaranda), the frames present the species’ signature range of warm honey to deep brown veins. The wood has been professionally refinished to a warm, satin-matte tone that privileges grain and figure as the primary expressive device. Joinery is refined and unobtrusive; the ladder back reads as a formal device for ventilation and cadence rather than ornament. The seats have been reupholstered in a sober yellow woven fabric that functions as a mid-tone counterpoint to the wood, integrating color without distracting from the chair’s compositional restraint.
Function is considered and deliberate: the geometry of the seat and rail provides upright, supportive seating — comfort described as considered support rather than excess. Condition: in excellent vintage condition. The wood has been professionally refinished and the upholstery renewed; age-appropriate marks are present at the feet and edges, contributing character without compromising integrity. Restoration has been discreet and sympathetic, preserving original proportions and construction.
A measured example of mid-century Brazilian seating by Carlo Hauner, this pair is suited to collectors and interiors that value sculptural balance, material integrity, and the careful stewardship of authentic objects.
