A sculptural and highly disciplined dining set by Giuseppe Scapinelli, this rare group of eight chairs embodies the sensual curvature and structural clarity that define Brazilian Modern design at its height.
Executed in richly grained caviúna wood—Scapinelli’s preferred hardwood—the chairs reveal the material’s density, tonal depth, and expressive veining. The frames have been professionally refinished, preserving their architectural sharpness while maintaining a satin matte surface true to the period. The tapered legs and subtly curved back supports demonstrate Scapinelli’s mastery of proportion: slender yet grounded, decorative yet structurally rigorous.
The seats and backrests are currently upholstered in a later striped cotton fabric (not original to the 1950s), presented in OK condition. The vertical striping introduces a subtle architectural rhythm that echoes and enhances the chairs’ elongated silhouette. The upholstery choice adds visual lift without competing with the warmth and depth of the caviúna, allowing the wood grain to remain the primary focal point.
Originally acquired from a private residence in Rio de Janeiro—Brazil’s former capital—this set reflects the refined domestic modernism that characterized upper-tier interiors of the 1950s.
Offered as a complete set of eight chairs (six currently shown, with two under restoration), this grouping presents a compelling opportunity for collectors seeking a cohesive and architecturally expressive dining ensemble.
The matching dining table (Lot 628), featured in the second image, is available separately, allowing for the acquisition of a fully integrated Scapinelli dining suite.
An exceptional acquisition for collectors of Brazilian Modern furniture, Giuseppe Scapinelli scholarship, and museum-caliber 1950s design.
