A foundational work in the evolution of Brazilian Modern design, the “Paulistana” lounge chair and ottoman by Jorge Zalszupin embodies the technical innovation and material sophistication that defined late-1950s São Paulo.
Designed in 1959 and produced by Zalszupin’s own atelier, L’Atelier, the model marked a decisive moment in Brazilian furniture history: the pioneering use of molded jacaranda (Brazilian rosewood) plywood to achieve structural curvature without sacrificing strength. The chair’s sculptural wooden shell rests on a refined metal base, creating a dynamic tension between organic form and industrial precision.
Named after the citizens of São Paulo — the Paulistanos — the design reflects the cosmopolitan ambition of Brazil’s rapidly modernizing cultural capital. It stands among the earliest Brazilian seating models to synthesize European modernist construction methods with native hardwood richness.
This particular example was acquired from a private residence in São Paulo. The jacaranda shell and metal base are original and remain in excellent condition. The set has been reupholstered in suede by Manuelzinho, the master upholsterer known for his collaboration with Sergio Rodrigues in the 1980s — a significant artisanal lineage that reinforces authenticity and quality of restoration.
Architecturally assertive yet deeply comfortable, the “Paulistana” is not merely a lounge chair; it is a design milestone that helped define the trajectory of modern furniture in Brazil. A museum-caliber acquisition for collectors of Zalszupin, L’Atelier production, and early Brazilian Modernism.
