A rare and important piece of American decorative arts history. This is the "Bacchus" cigarette box designed by the celebrated American artist and illustrator Rockwell Kent (1882–1971) for Chase Chrome & Brass Company, produced exclusively in 1935 and 1936.
Kent created only three objects for Chase — this cigarette box, a Wine Cooler, and a Wine Bottle Stand — all united by the same iconic young Bacchus motif. All three are considered scarce today.
The hinged copper lid bears a bold Art Deco relief of Bacchus striding nude with grape clusters in each hand, two leaping goats at his feet, and distant mountains behind — a composition entirely characteristic of Kent's monumental, heroic graphic style.
Authentication is unambiguous: the underside carries a clear, crisp "CHASE / USA" centaur hallmark. The interior retains its original wood lining and center divider, both intact. The artist's initials "R.K." are incised at lower right.
