Who knows how many decades this small two-masted sailing craft carried cargo between area ports. But here she finally is, listing starboard against the rocks and stuck in the mud at low tide. Left a wreck, she’s too weathered to be salvaged and too expensive to tow away.
The heavy impasto on this painting in tones of grayish-green add to the sense of coastal life’s constant motion, of the water and the wind and the boat’s lines still snapping against the masts. You can almost taste the salt air.
