A rare and striking sculptural piece from Sarreid Ltd. - made in Korea.
Hand-carved from solid beechwood, the face is deeply and expressively incised: rounded cheeks, a furrowed brow, glaring eyes, flared nostrils, and a jutting, characterful chin. The tusks are an inventive construction detail — rolled copper sheets, riveted along one side and set into carved sockets in the jaw. The verso is open and hollowed, revealing the internal wooden support beam and the tusk fittings, offering an unusually transparent look at the maker's craft. The piece sits on a sturdy polished brass pedestal stand.
Sarreid Ltd. was founded in the 1960s by American entrepreneurs Alex Sarrat and Walter Reid, who relocated to Spain to tap European artisan traditions and bring handcrafted decorative objects to the American market. Their early animal sculptures — rams, bulls, birds, and this walrus — are now firmly collectible.
