This is royal art, created to glorify the great king, or OBA, believed to possess divine ancestry. The bronze casters guild historically served the monarchy exclusively, with smaller pieces occasionally available to chiefs. This tradition has flourished since the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Each Benin casting was made using the lost-wax technique, an ancient method that produces one-of-a-kind pieces. This labor-intensive process ensures no two works are identical, making each head a unique testament to the skill and artistry of its creator. A remarkable example of African bronze craftsmanship and cultural heritage. See less
