This abstract painting is a work by Joan Miller Linsley (1922–2000), an American artist recognized for her contributions to the Washington, D.C. art scene and her powerful social commentary. Based in Arlington, Virginia, Linsley was best known for her mural "Washington 63'," depicting the March on Washington.
This work displays the artist’s energetic, textured brushwork—"action painting," a style where the physical act of painting is as important as the final image—and a vibrant palette of warm oranges, reds, cool blues, and whites. In 1961, when this piece was completed, as dated next to her signature (photo #7), she was preparing for her first major exhibition at San Francisco's Edward Quill Gallery. In fact, this canvas’ raw edge verso reads “Joan M. Linsley, 69 Buena Vista Terrace, S.F. 17” (photo #09), which suggests that she was staying temporarily in San Francisco in preparation for the opening.
Her works were featured in the State Department’s Art in Embassies Program and were exhibited at the Washington Women's Art Center and various galleries. After her death, much of her estate was donated to the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
Signature/Maker’s mark: Lower right corner (photo #7). Unframed dimensions: 40”w x 30”h.
