This mixed media piece exemplifies Inez Storer's "magical realism," combining paint and collage to explore identity and personal history. The work features familiar motifs like hats and childlike figures, characteristic of her balance between whimsical charm and underlying mystery.
Born in Santa Monica in 1933, Storer was influenced by Hollywood and family secrets, which inform her narrative-rich style and use of theatrical space—a nod to her father, Franz Bachelin, an Oscar-nominated Art Director. She studied at UC Berkeley, SFAI, and earned her MFA from San Francisco State University in 1971. Storer taught at SFAI (1981–1999), Sonoma State, and College of Marin.
Her 2023 show “Allow Nothing to Worry You” at Gallery 16 was exhibited with her late husband, Andrew Romanoff, whom she met after moving to Inverness, California. They raised a blended family of six, and her work is included in collections such as San Franisco’s de Young Museum.
