The Story
A museum-quality addition to any architectural or fine art collection. This 1883 etching by the legendary American artist Joseph Pennell (1857–1926) depicts the historic Piazza del Comune in Pistoia, Italy. Hand-signed in pencil by the artist, this work represents the peak of the 19th-century American Etching Revival.
Details & Condition
This piece is presented in its original vintage frame and is in remarkably undisturbed condition.
Authenticity: Pencil signed by the artist in the lower margin. The professional dust seal on the reverse remains intact.
Paper: Original wove paper featuring natural cockling (rippling) at the edges, confirming it has never been dry-mounted.
Glazing: Original vintage glass. Please note "character marks" consistent with age, including minor surface pitting (flea bites) and faint internal mineral spotting. These details are only visible upon close inspection and do not detract from the visual impact of the etching.
Frame: Vintage black wood frame with an authentic time-worn patina.
Matting: Note a visible area of historic moisture-toning/mat-burn in the upper right corner of the matting (see photos). This is contained entirely within the mat and does not reach the etching itself.
