Original engraving published in Harper's Weekly in January 1892. The artwork was drawn by Charles Graham, a prolific 19th-century illustrator, based on photographs by the notable San Francisco photographer Isaiah West Taber. Dimensions: 24" x 18"
The engraving features seven distinct vignettes showcasing iconic San Francisco landmarks of the late 19th century:
1. San Francisco Bay: A sweeping view of the water and surrounding hills.
2. Seal Rocks: A view of the rugged offshore formations.
3. Jefferson Square: A depiction of the public park area.
4. Market Street: A bustling scene showing the city's main thoroughfare and its architecture.
5. Union Square: A central city gathering place.
6. Cliff House: This shows the original 1863 structure, which was a modest one-story wood-frame resort before being replaced by later, more elaborate versions.
7. California Street: Another key urban streetscape of the era.
