Large vase on a round base, flaring out like a bulge and then tapering to a long, conical neck; opening … Read more Large vase on a round base, flaring out like a bulge and then tapering to a long, conical neck; opening with a slightly flared rim; colourless glass with milky-white and reddish-brown powder flecks; overglaze in dark brown; a multi-layered, highly etched and polished decoration featuring vine leaves, tendrils and grapes against a satin-finished background. Cameo signature '*Gallé' at the bottom of the side between the plants. Hand-made Cameo Glass: Glass overlaid with several layers, with high-cut worked out motifs. Since the middle of the 19th century, the design has also been done by etching. Cameo glass vessels were already being made in antiquity; at the end of the 19th century, Émile Gallé further developed this glass art, created Art Nouveau designs and employed a large factory in Nancy.
