Plan of the town of Alexandria, Virginia, 1944. A rare restrike of George Gilpin’s important and phenomenally scarce 1798 plan of Alexandria, Virginia. Published by I.V. Thomas.
Gilpin’s plan depicts Alexandria, Virginia at a period of rapid growth, when, as the lone port of entry on the Potomac River, it was one of the country’s busiest ports. The street plan is shown with street names indicated, including several on newly filled land along the river, and a legend identifies several houses of worship, the central market, the Fairfax and Lee estates, and Cameron’s grist mill outside of town.
Custom framed with a wide neutral mat, classic dark moulding and UV-protectant glass. The floating style presentation highlights the generous margins and preserves the map’s archival character. Dimensions: 29 1/2 x 38"
