An early carved and gilded wooden figure of a woman, likely produced in Italy or southern Germany during the late 17th or early 18th century. The figure’s raised hand and missing attribute suggest she may have represented an allegorical virtue or classical personification, a common theme in Baroque decorative sculpture.
Carved from a single block of wood with visible tool marks, flowing drapery, and remnants of original gilding, the piece shows the hallmarks of Baroque craftsmanship. The surface has developed a rich, time‑worn patina.
Notable Features:
• Giltwood with polychrome traces
• Baroque drapery and hair carving
• Raised‑hand gesture typical of allegorical figures
• Later wall hanger (20th century), not original
• Two broken fingers and expected age‑related wear
• Missing element: The outstretched hand likely once held an attribute (possibly a horn, torch, or scroll)
• *Size approximations: 18 1/2 inches tall x 7 1/2 inches wide x 4 3/4 inches deep
• Weight approximation: 4 pounds, 15.9 ounces
*Please also see photos for size (note any coin, ruler and/ or pop can used to illustrate size are not included in the sale).
A compelling example of early European wood sculpture with strong decorative and historical appeal.
