Calamander is an exotic wood used by the Brits in the 19th century for small boxes and furniture. The lines on the top are not splits, but rather, the four quadrants of calamander veneer where they are pieced together. On the front is a decorative brass escutcheon since there is no lock. The hinged lid opens to reveal its original mirror surrounded by a Birds Eye maple frame--the mirror has significant distemper but is still functional. There is mild warping to the lid and the box has a few dings and scratches but considering it dates from around 1860-80, it is in very good condition. A beautiful little piece of cabinet work.
