American Empire is back — and this magnificent mahogany settee from the Empire Revival period is exactly why collectors and decorators are so drawn to the style. The scrolled cornucopia arms sweeping upward in rich mahogany. The carved rosette volute terminals. The dramatic paw feet. The bold crest rail with its scrolled carved ends. The deep crimson velvet. This is the Empire aesthetic at its most theatrical and most beautiful, produced in the late 19th century by a maker who knew the tradition intimately and had the skill to realize it fully.
The Empire Revival movement of the 1870s through 1900s drew directly from the archaeological classicism of the original 1820s–40s Empire period — the same paw feet, the same scrolled arms, the same figured mahogany and monumental proportions — and translated it through the Victorian era's enthusiasm for historical ornament and grand domestic interiors. The result was furniture of real decorative ambition, built to last and designed to command a room.
The carving on this settee — from the fluid arm curves to the rosette terminals to the sculptural paw feet — is executed with the confidence of a skilled hand working a well-understood tradition. The mahogany throughout is warm and beautifully patinated. The crimson velvet upholstery with bolster cushions suits the drama of the form perfectly.
A piece for a room of real decorative ambition — a formal living room, a library, an entry hall, a maximalist interior that embraces historical depth and unapologetic grandeur. Empire Revival furniture of this quality is genuinely collectible and increasingly hard to find.
