This is an antique, late Qing dynasty era Chinese red lacquer wedding basket/box. It comes with a letter to my grandfather, dated 1939, from someone who wanted to buy it, and it’s referred to as a “water bucket” in the correspondence. This box has a circular, split cover and movable curved handle with elegant gilded carved dragons. It has a beautiful glazed wood interior and bottom. Measures apx 15” tall with the handle up x 12” widest diameter (10.5” across the base).
This is a decorative item with the red lacquer symbolized good luck and great fortune. It’s in very good condition for its age, having been stored. The lacquer has some small seam cracking and the wood pieces seem loose because the glue is old.
