Created by the Kuba people, it was traditionally worn during ceremonial events and initiation rites, symbolizing Woot, a supernatural figure credited with naming animals and bringing civilization. Known as the "Children of Woot," the Kuba believed the masked dancer was accompanied by guardians, as the mask itself lacks eye holes.
