A move is forcing downsizing and I will be sad to relinquish this beautiful William Gudenrath venetian-style goblet, which I purchased during a visit to Corning Museum of Glass, where William is a resident adviser at The Studio, is a glassblower, scholar, lecturer, and teacher. (A similar goblet is on sale in the Corning Museum shop for $990).
Per the Museum of Art & Design, which has a Gudenrath goblet in its collection, dragon or serpent-style goblets like these were very fashionable in seventeenth-century Italy, designed to show off the complex techniques of Renaissance Venetian glass-working. These venetian-style Dragon Goblets feature an elaborate stem that depicts a serpent with a coiled body and outstretched wings, demonstrating the refined skill of the maker.
The goblet is 11 1/2" tall and 3 7/8" diameter. Excellent condition. Signed. 2001.
And personally, I love the colors! The purple is stunning and a wonderful contrast to the sunny yellow dragon.
