About the Designer
Eero Saarinen designed the Pedestal Collection in 1956, vowing to eliminate what he called the "slum of legs" beneath chairs and tables. The result — a single sculptural base supporting each piece — became one of the most recognizable icons of mid-century modernism. The collection received the Museum of Modern Art Award and has been in continuous production by Knoll since its introduction. Every significant piece of furniture, Saarinen believed, should have a holistic structure — and the Tulip table remains the definitive expression of that ideal.
