Originating from the Mediterranean pottery traditions of Sicily, Italy, these jars were the backbone of agrarian life. They were engineered for the storage and short-range transport of olive oil and wine. Functionally, the tapered base allowed the vessel to be nestled into the cool, earthen floors of cellars (cantine), while the dual-handle design facilitated manual transport or suspension.
