This painting is a distinguished example of vintage surrealism by Fabio Lemus, a mid-century artist working in Chile noted for his theatrical and whimsical imagery. The composition features a stylized feminine figure with pronounced, elfin ears and intricate, antler-like branches emerging from her head, set against a barren and dreamlike landscape. In the distance, ethereal structures evoke a futuristic or fantastical city rising from a misty horizon.
The work embodies classic mid-century surrealist characteristics, including smooth, sculptural shading and elongated, elegant forms. The fusion of human features with both fantastical and organic elements—such as the theatrical positioning of the hands and the prominent, winged eyebrows—reflects Lemus’s distinctive, stage-inspired approach.
Although comprehensive biographical information on Fabio Lemus is limited, he is acknowledged for his influence on theatrical surrealism. Documentation (photo #13) indicates that this piece was completed circa 1954 and that Lemus was officially registered within the Chilean national archives system, which managed artist oversight during that period.
Further support for a Chilean connection derives from the artist’s unique style of elfin and theatrical surrealism, as demonstrated in this 1954 portrait; it aligns with themes characteristic of the Chilean Generación del 50—an era renowned for its psychological and "magical" realism. His signature "Fabio Lemus C." adheres to the conventional Chilean paternal/maternal naming format.
Additionally, caricatures on the stretcher (photo #12) contribute a further element of intrigue. This work offers a compelling addition to any Mid-Century art collection, imparting a sophisticated and enigmatic presence to its surroundings.
Signature/Maker’s mark: Bottom right corner (photo #9 ). Unframed dimensions: 16”w x 20”h.
