brand michael andersen (attributed) (rønne, bornholm, 1859–1931) was a danish ceramist and entrepreneur, founder of the michael andersen & sons factory, one of the most important artistic ceramics manufacturers on the island of bornholm in the 20th century. In 1890, he took over an old pottery workshop that had been in operation since 1773 and transformed it into a modern factory specializing in artistic and everyday ceramics. Under his leadership and later that of his four sons, the company produced vases, plates, jugs, decorative figurines, and home furnishings in stoneware, characterized by elegant forms and glazes of the highest quality, often complex and iridescent. Particularly well-known are the persia glazes developed by his son daniel in the 1930s, as well as art deco decorations, floral motifs, and figures in classical or nordic styles. Production reached its peak in the 1940s and 1950s, with over 70 employees. The ceramics of michael andersen & sons, marked with the ma&s logo or the three herrings (the symbol of rønne), are today highly prized by collectors of 20th-century scandinavian ceramics for their technical quality and the beauty of their glazes.
