Porcelain figurine girl with chick, ens manufacture (karl ens). Germany, 1930s/1940s origin germany – volkstedt (thuringia) period 1930s/1940s author ens germany (karl ens porzellanfabrik)
the porzellanfabrik karl ens is a historic german fine porcelain factory located in volkstedt (near rudolstadt, thuringia), a region that has been an important center of porcelain production for centuries. The ens family had been active since 1860 with the firm triebner, ens & co. In 1899, karl ens senior founded his own independent factory, which quickly acquired a reputation for the high quality of its porcelain and hand-painting. Karl ens senior had two sons: karl junior (who managed the factory from 1919 to around 1939) and eduard. The production specialized in realistic figurines (especially birds, parrots, herons, pheasants, various animals), vases and decorative objects, often with highly detailed underglaze painting. The best-known mark is the so-called windmill mark with the crossed letters ens, accompanied by germany. The green/bluish mark you have on your piece is typical of the period 1919-1945 (with a peak in the 1920s-40s). The factory remained in family hands until the post-war period. In 1972, during the gdr period, it was nationalized and incorporated into the veb sitzendorfer porzellanmanufaktur. After german reunification (1990) it was privatized again. Pieces from the interwar period are particularly sought after for the quality of the porcelain and the decoration.
