Rare Large-Scale Signed Ceramic Art Platter by Duilio Jimenez
Artist: Duilio Jimenez
Origin: San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua
Medium: Hand-thrown, Incised (Sgraffito) Stoneware
Dimensions: 18 inches (approx. 45 cm) in diameter
A magnificent and exceptionally large decorative ceramic platter by the renowned Nicaraguan master potter Duilio Jimenez. This piece is a stunning example of the contemporary pottery revival in San Juan de Oriente, a village world-famous for its millennia-old ceramic traditions.
The platter features a sophisticated Sgraffito (incised) design, showcasing five stylized, nautilus-inspired organic forms. Each shell is intricately detailed with fine, hand-etched lines and surrounded by deep obsidian-colored dots, creating a beautiful contrast against the natural, speckled earth-tone background.
Master Craftsman & Technique
Duilio Jimenez is celebrated for his ability to blend pre-Columbian techniques with modern, minimalist aesthetics. Every detail on this platter is hand-carved into the clay before firing, a process that requires immense precision.
Unlike mass-produced ceramics, this piece is decorated with natural mineral pigments, giving it a warm, authentic character.
Exceptional Size & Rarity:
While Jimenez's work is highly sought after by international collectors, it is rare to find a piece of this magnitude. Measuring a substantial 18 inches (45 cm), this platter is a true "showstopper."
Hand-firing a piece of this diameter is technically difficult, as the risk of cracking in traditional kilns is high. This makes it a rare find compared to the more common 10-12 inch versions.
Details & Condition:
Signature: Hand-signed by the artist on the reverse (Duilio Jimenez).
Display: The back features a built-in ceramic loop/boss designed to hold wire for secure wall mounting.
Usage: This is a high-end decorative art piece (not intended for food use).
