These four views — the Jardin du Roi seen from the river and from the amphitheatre side, the Palais des … Read more These four views — the Jardin du Roi seen from the river and from the amphitheatre side, the Palais des Tuileries from the courtyard, and the interior court of the Hôtel de Cluny — form a coherent portrait of Paris at a hinge moment in its history. The Jardin du Roi, renamed the Jardin des Plantes after the Revolution, was already one of the city’s great public gardens; the Tuileries Palace, shown here in full imperial grandeur, was destroyed by fire during the Paris Commune in 1871 and never rebuilt, making this view a document of something lost. The Hôtel de Cluny, then in private hands, would become one of France’s great medieval museums. Each print retains its original hand-coloring and is housed in a period gilt wood frame.
